The liver requires a constant supply of virtually every known vitamin and mineral, but two nutrients - methionine and choline are particularly important to a healthy metabolism. As natural lipotropic agents, these compounds promote the breakdown of fat. Methionine, an essential amino acid, is the major lipotropic compound in humans. When estrogen levels are high, the body requires more methionine. Methionine helps deactivate the negative effect of estrogens by correcting the balance. When higher levels of toxic compounds (cellulite deposits) are present, more methionine is needed. Choline is a nutrient that's essential for helping to turn fat into energy within the liver. In addition to the way it helps the liver deal with fat, choline has another function: It helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain. Choline is the single best means for conserving memory and other higher brain functions as we age. Lecithin The liver exports fat. To do that, it must wrap the fat in an envelope containing lecithin and certain proteins. When lecithin is unavailable, no envelope can be made, and fat accumulates in the liver. Liver cells low in lecithin fill up with fat and then die. Inositol Inositol is required for proper formation of cell membranes. It affects nerve transmission and helps in transporting fats within the body. Quercetin and other bioflavonoids Flavonoids are antioxidant substances, usually found in foods along with vitamin C. As a group, bioflavonoids keep capillary blood vessels strong and reduce bleeding and bruising. Quercetin (in the Aspalathus linearis (Espelin®) extract) has been the subject of recent studies. It can decrease allergic reactions by several mechanisms. Quercetin may be helpful not only in allergies, but in all kinds of inflammatory responses, such as injury, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Betaine Hydrochloride A low level of gastric acid (betaine HCL) increases the likelihood and severity of certain bacterial and parasitic intestinal infections. A normal stomachs level of gastric acid is sufficient to destroy bacteria. L-Carnitine L-carnitine is made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is needed to release energy from fat. Its actions appear to be particularly important in the heart.
